I remember when I was
young
a strange day in a crowded town
everyone rushing and then a bell
people stood
like statues and silence fell |
| |
Buses
halted, although planes still flew
factories
stopped and offices too
and then I heard my
Mother say
"Remember, this is Poppy Day" |
| |

We all live such hectic lives these days
as we rush around and round
forgetting it’s
poppy day,
and forgetting those so still in
the ground |
| |
So take a minute of your life
to remember
a minute's so much less than the
years
of their lives, they gave for me and
you
and remember the survivors and their
tears |
| |
That loud bang I
heard, what was it?
my son rushing
out and slamming the door?
our hectic
lifestyles now are so different
I
don't realise the distant roar.. |
| |
is the cannon
firing in London
it's eleven and I'm
late again
for a meeting, I dash out
and copy my son
slam the door, that’s
another Armistice gone |
| |
There's a man from
a different generation,
not in a rush
like you and me
he fought and his
side won the war
but he's not
thinking of victory |
| |
He's thinking of
loss, the loss of the many men
faces
he remembers, but will never see again
so young & brave & scared, they died in
the wars
friends & comrades fighting
for a common cause |
| |
He rarely talks
about the war
doesn't speak of the
horrors that he saw
the dead are
victims but so is he
there's no such
thing as victory |
| |
And remember
wars have two sides
remember the
enemy who died
the sad thing about
the great victory
he had to kill
people like him, and like you and me |
| |
There's no day
to remember them
so remember the
survivors too
they are also victims
they fought for me and you |
| |
Also standing in
the dwindling crowd
which get smaller
every year
are those who survived
those dreadful years
sons and lovers
lost, those endless tears |
| |
We all live

| The First Two Minute Silence in
London (11 November 1919) was reported in the
Manchester Guardian on 12 November 1919:

| After writing the poem, I found this account
on Wikipedia of the
first two minute silence and it brings to
life the first passage of the poem, although in
an era pre-modern technology; |
| "The first stroke of
eleven produced a magical effect. The tram cars
glided into stillness, motors ceased to cough
and fume, and stopped dead, and the
mighty-limbed dray horses hunched back upon
their loads and stopped also, seeming to do it
of their own volition. |
| Someone took off his
hat, and with a nervous hesitancy the rest of
the men bowed their heads also. Here and there
an old soldier could be detected slipping
unconsciously into the posture of 'attention'.
An elderly woman, not far away, wiped her eyes,
and the man beside her looked white and stern.
|
| Everyone stood very
still ... The hush deepened. It had spread over
the whole city and become so pronounced as to
impress one with a sense of audibility. It was a
silence which was almost pain ... And the spirit
of memory brooded over it all". |
