Georgi Bartlett - Saxophonist On
Remember Poppy Day
|
Georgi is an extraordinary young lady who was
born in Poole, Dorset. At the tender age of
15 she taught herself to play the saxophone and
later followed that by teaching herself to play
the piano as well! |
 |
Georgi learnt to play the flute in 1997 and,
after becoming a member of the Sussex County
Music Service, progressed her way through the
South Downs Youth Concert Band and the South
Downs Youth Orchestra. |
In 2001 she joined the East Sussex Wind
Orchestra where she was principal flute from
2003 to 2005 having also had the honour of
playing principal flute in the Royal Albert Hall
during that time. |
In 2004 she joined the East Sussex Youth
Orchestra as principal flute and also became a
member of the Crowborough Youth Jazz Band where
she put her saxophone skills to good use. A
stint with a College Rock Band completed
Georgi's excellent grounding in all things
band-worthy. |
Georgi
exudes a passion for music. in a chance meeting
with Cliff van Tonder (founder of Elmbridge
Choir in Surrey), she was offered the
opportunity to help launch and become the first
ever leader of the
Elmbridge Big Band in 2008. |
Two years
later, the Big Band has grown to 30 members and
has performed concerts for various charities
together with
Elmbridge Choir, Elmbridge Ladies
Choir and Elmbridge Young Musicians. The choirs
and bands collectively known as
Elmbridge Music
have raised in excess of £70,000 for charities
over the past 5 years. |
In the
Spring of 2010 Elmbridge Choir was involved in
'So Surrey', a Creative Communities project with
the purpose of encouraging and nurturing
participation in music and the arts.
Professional musicians and a theatre director
were commissioned to write a musical drama for
the choir to perform. Georgi accompanied the
choir on saxophone at the performances of ‘Till
the Rivers Cease to Flow' (a musical drama
exploring Elmbridge past and present). |
Chris Grace
(writer of Remember Poppy Day) is a member of
Elmbridge Choir and was so impressed by Georgi's
sax performances, at these concerts that he
recommended her to Olly as the sax player for
the Remember Poppy Day record. That confidence
has been fully justified with not only Georgi's
playing, but also her creative contributions
which add so many special moments to the song. |
 |
Chris also
feels that it was the Creative Communities
project which gave him the idea he could write
songs and the confidence to take the big step of
releasing this single by teaming up with his
friend Olly Wedgwood. |

Community Music For All - Bands, Choirs, Musical
Drama - Get Involved |
Georgi and
Chris are privileged to be working with such
talented musicians as Olly and Sam Wedgwood, but
they also enjoy participating in the local
community choirs and big band. Music should be
enjoyed at both the highest levels and by all
members of the public in their local
communities. If you think you might enjoy
singing in a choir or local band, don't put it
off - get involved and enjoy yourselves. |

writing, the Elmbridge Music (Society)
is continuing to grow with the imminent
